5th percentile

by

I believe the following list will clearly illustrate why Sam’s weight is so low. Omitted from the list are foods that were thrown angrily to the floor.

Breakfast
A few bites of banana
1/4 whole wheat bagel with butter
Frozen Stonyfield peach yogurt
A couple of cheddar bunnies
water

Snack
Most of an apple
Many, many cheddar bunnies
water

Lunch
3 1/2 spinach nuggets
a few sips of my banana/berry/soymilk smoothie
water

Snack
tortilla chips
cheddar bunnies
water

Dinner
a peach
a few spoonfuls of yogurt
a couple of crackers with peanut butter
1/2 spinach nugget
a few roasted carrots in olive oil

It seems like nowadays every kid that looks fairly healthy to me is under 10th percentile … perhaps they either need a new scale, or it has gone up since kids’ weights have gone up… like, 50% of 1980 = 25% of 2000 just out of my as an example of what I am thinking. (Does it work that way?)

I have struggled so many times with the idea that my daughter is just picky. She is almost two. I have tried to feed her like constantly throughout the day even when I felt like she wasn’t eating enough because so many people kept telling me she was underweight. The doctor didn’t seem concerned but that wasn’t enough for me. Then one day I was at the WIC office and the nutritional counselor looked over the paper of what she will eat and I realized she had a pretty good diet going for her actually, she just eats smaller portions than I expect. Then to top that off the nutritional counselor said to me “Well if you look at just her weight she is a little small for her age but if you look at her weight and her height thats exactly where you want her to be. She’s just petite.” I had never ever thought about it that way and it had never been pointed out to me like that…now when people tell me my kid is skinny I jab back with no she just isn’t a chubby thing…she is right on target. I’m not concerned anymore. She has her multi vitamin so even on the days when she is extra picky its okay because I know she is doing just fine!

My girls are all low on the percentile and have been since they were a few months old. My 7 year old just made it to 10 percent. As long as they are showing growth that is all that matters. Like my doctor says some kids are just slim. She also said to look back at how my husband and I were when we were children. I was always called “Stringbean or zipper” in class. You know your so skinny if you stuck your tongue out you’d look like a sipper? Remember toddlers have to much exploring to do to be tied down eating.

About Kids Dish

If you flip through the pages of a number of kids’ magazines, you get the impression that kids’ meals should be Michelin affairs, complete with matching dishware and veggies cut to resemble the works of impressionist painters.

Let’s be real. Parents don’t have that kind of time. And kids have to eat. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Kids' dish focuses on healthy, practical meal solutions for kids… and occasionally, that might mean matching dishware.
