Cake Dreams (like Pipe Dreams, but crumblier)
2 weeks to go, and I have to figure out what I’m going to do for Raeli’s birthday cake!
Last year, she was newish enough to solid foods that I wasn’t used to feeding her anything but vegetables, fruit, plain carbs (rice, bread, noodles) and protein - the idea of giving her cake squicked me out.
I compromised by adding a couple of punnets of pureed blueberries to the cake mixture, so it would at least be nutritious as well as, you know, cake. Plus there was the added bonus of making a purple cake, considering that purple had pretty much become her signature colour.
At the time, I was pleased enough with the blueberry recipe that I resolved to make it her Birthday Cake and repeat it each year. Now I’m not so sure. Do I want to get hemmed in like that? Or could I create something new and wonderful?
I got a free Party Cake liftout with a magazine a few months ago, and have been eyeing it off. One in particular caught my eye, with thick yellow ganache icing and pink decorations. That combination of yellow and pink really feels like it suits Raeli now, rather than Raeli 12 months ago.
Hmm. More thinking to do. Mostly, I’m thinking it has to be a Fairy Cake. Fairies and Wiggles are her two obsessions, and I’m damned if I’m going to go the all the trouble of constructing a Big Red Car.
