I’ll have some butter with that, please
On Monday at his 15 month appointment we learned that Sam’s weight has dropped to the fifth percentile. The doctor’s not concerned and we’re not concerned, but she did mention that we needed to slip him some extra calories, especially since he doesn’t drink milk. She suggested adding butter and oil where we can and giving him peanut butter. Here’s a list of what he’s actually eaten this week.
Cheddar bunnies
bagels with butter
strawberries
peanut butter on crackers
mashed potatoes with kale
apples
pizza
tomato pie
whole wheat crostini dipped in sun dried tomato and mozzarella bruschetta (the boy loves to dip)
baby yogurt
green beans in butter
cherries
bananas
Looking at the list it doesn’t seem terrible altogether, but it’s a bit heavy on fruit and light on the green veggies. It also seems very low in protein and calcium. Maybe black bean dip? Smoothies with some spinach and silken tofu thrown in? What healthy foods do you feed a picky eater who needs to gain weight?

This isn’t the healthiest and certainly not an everyday type thing, but my daughter loves fruit too…and not many more, calorie dense foods, so every once in a while (once or a couple times a month, to be honest), we give her some spinach and artichoke dip with whole wheat pita.
she loves the garlicy taste; if your son liked it, it’d also be a great with tortilla shells. it’s generally made with goat cheese and/or sour cream - fairly high in fat while supplying a complete protein. i like to thik it’s helped my daughter go from under the 5th to the 10th percentile. Just a thought.

Amy was off the charts tiny and Katie was 10th percentile (Lord knows where they got it from). We did a lot of research. We didn’t give them any juice (Katie’s favorite drink to this day is water) because it’s mostly empty calories. We gave them lots of yogurt smoothies - which they loved. We also tried to do a lot of spreads - like peanut butter and cream cheese - on apples, crackers, etc. And oodles of cheese, they love cheese.
If he’s a dipper, also try dips like hummus and melanzata (you probably know from my earlier posts that I’m all about the dip).

I’ll try the spinach dip, though chances are I’ll end up eating all of it.
Sam’s so picky. He doesn’t drink any juice yet and hates the yogurt drinks. He won’t touch regular or chocolate milk. He’s started eating a bit of peanut butter but only on crackers. He hates cream cheese and won’t eat most other cheeses. He’s not into hummus either. Is melanzata like baba ghanoush?
The only high fat/calorie food he’ll eat reliably is butter on bagels or toast. I’m sort of at a loss. All I can do is keep offering him foods and hope he’ll eat them at some point.
