Jamie’s Dinners
We’ve been watching a dvd of the semi-recent Jamie Oliver series, Jamie’s Dinners, in which he attempts to revolutionise the British school dinners section.
I must say however horrific some of the revelations of this show are, I’ve come out of it feeling somewhat relieved. However guilty and concerned I sometimes feel about what I feed Raeli, I have to say that this show makes me feel like the world’s best mother!
Like, she has fruit and vegetables every day. She has access to real, unprocessed meat, chicken and fish. And for the most part, she eats what she puts in front of her.
The whole argument that “kids will only eat junk food and crap, and it’s better they have that than starve” makes my blood boil. Yeah, I eat my share of crap, but not as much as I used to. Having Raeli has really made me aware of trying to use food as nutrition rather than stomach-filler.
Looking back over the last few months, Raeli has come a long way, from only being happy with a few very plain, predictable foods, and being far more open to eating a varied diet. There are certain fruits and vegetables that just make her eyes light up - and she can clean off a corn-cob better than any of us!
We’re doing OK. And I have to say, I have never served her a turkey twizzler. We ordered a pizza the other night that had more nutritional content than some of the meals depicted in that show!

Tansy, do you use any particular recipes for your little one or just a combination of whatever you are eating? My son is obsessed with whatever my husband is eating, but my problem is my husband eats junk food constantly!

The Jamie Oliver series made for some uncomfortable viewing at times, when you see the crap some kids are putting in to their bodies on a daily basis. And the parents who in the follow up series were shown feeding McDonalds burgers through the school fences every lunchtime made me sick.
