Kids dish
My planned post of a no-cook Middle Eastern spread is postponed until tomorrow to bring you a “what the cranky toddler ate for dinner” update.
After frantically signaling for food and drink I brought Sam downstairs to eat. He refused water in his sippy cup and water in my glass. Crying the whole time and adamantly shaking his head no, he refused spinach nuggets, broccoli and cheese nuggets, string cheese, crackers, a peach, an apple, a banana, blueberries, a piece of cantaloupe, a wedge of watermelon, leftover spaghetti with spinach in a tomato cream sauce, tabouli, a piece of baguette, and Cheddar Bunnies. He pointed for the lime hanging in the fruit basket. I reminded him that he doesn’t like eating whole limes. He insisted and I relented. He shook his head and cried some more. At this point Bob came downstairs and offered Sam some of his water. Sam took a sip, signed that he wanted to eat and continued whining and shaking his head no.
The crying lasted a bit longer so I went into the freezer and grabbed an orange popsicle. He saw it and nodded yes. I showed him how to hold the stick and he ate almost the entire thing. When he reached the point where he could no longer reach the popsicle on the stick I showed him how to turn it around and eat it sideways. Bob remarked on the steam coming off the popsicle and asked if it was freezer burned. I asked if he knew how old the popsicle was. He said, “since you were pregnant, right?” I said, “Yes. We brought them back from our vacation in the Outer Banks at the very beginning of my pregnancy.” Our son happily ate a two year old orange popsicle. Then after crying some more he ate a purple one.
After he worked his way mostly through the purple popsicle he managed to eat some of the spaghetti, a bite of cheese, a few bites of cantaloupe. He ate a bite of banana before crying about it being broken in half and throwing it on the floor. Then, proving he has a bit of gourmet in him, he ate some of my Vosges Red Fire ice cream- Ancho and chipotle chillies, Ceylon cinnamon and dark chocolate.
Popsicles and fancy ice cream for dinner. How’s that for a Kid’s Dish?
Oh, and don’t forget to congratulate Kelli- her baby was born Monday, July 9th!
