Say it with Bento
My Christmas present to “the house” this year was the art of bento.
For a couple of months, the Man of the House and I have taken turns filling a restaurant-sized bento each Sunday night. Between us, we have learned to make Japanese omelette, steamed wontons, and all manner of yummies.
I wasn’t able to find any lunchbox-style bentos in Tasmania (or, to be honest, in the country - I’m sure there are some Asian shops on the mainland that sell these things, but non I could find with a selling website…). So I went to good old Ebay and got myself one for each family member, shipped from Japan.
For Raeli, I couldn’t resist the teeny Hello Kitty model. She also got a pair of chopsticks with duckies on them. She can’t use the things, but she loves to try!
This is the first meal she had in the bento - a Boxing Day lunch of ham (giant ham!), steamed vegies and rice. For the record, she ate the ham and the rice.
And here are our bentos. I chose an oval black box for the Man of the House, as it’s suitably conventional looking so he could take it to work without feeling self-conscious. Mine is more rectangular, blue and has a dragonfly stamped on it.
Our boxes here contain a slightly more elaborate version of Little Miss’s lunch - we have steamed greens as well as the diced vegies, and I have some smoked salmon on mine along with the ham (I deserved it!). The second layer is scallop wontons - sadly, though, the scallops weren’t the freshest (they’d been bought on the Saturday and were consumed on the Tuesday) and they tasted a little funky. The Man curried up the remaining scallops for dinner and they were wonderful.
Also, as a side note, he bought more scallops for New Years Eve and did them as fried rather than steamed wontons, and they were the most delicious thing I have ever eaten, ever. Ever.
Another barbecue this weekend, just after we’ve finished eating the sausages from the last one! Gah! And there’s Aurelia Day coming up…
