Saying goodbye
Sadly it’s time to say goodbye to enjoyable dinners out. Now that Sam’s officially a toddler he’s completely lost interest in sitting in a high chair for than a few minutes at a time. Since he was just a few weeks old we’ve been dragging him along to happy hours, dinners, leisurely lunches, brunches and late afternoon coffee and pastries and he’s always been a pretty good sport about it. But now his desire to escape the confines of a high chair has won out. He can be okay if there are other kids at the table to play with or people besides his dad and I to entertain him, but when it’s just the three of us his cries and kicking and fighting have gotten to be too much for me to handle. Margaritas are a lot less fun when you’re toddler wrangling. I think we’ve finally gotten to the point where a babysitter is a necessity.
At what point can you bring them back out again?

Oh, don’t give up! Have you tried sitting in booths? We have great luck with our 21 month if we sit in a booth. He hates high chairs, too! We let him stand in the booth beside us and then he doesn’t feel so restricted. We also try to get a window that faces outside - traffic is an awesome entertained for a little boy who loves cars.
We also bring lots of entertainment in the way of toys. It also helps if one of us leaves to let him run around a bit in the waiting area of the restaurant - we return when the food has arrived and that lessens the time he is confined.
