Thanksgiving 2008
The past few years I’ve learned the hard way that no one really cares about your (my) Thanksgiving recipes. At least not in my family. Around here people want their food salty, fatty, and covered in gravy. My father-in-law doesn’t even bother putting any vegetables on his plate. So this year I’m going with it to the best of my ability.
I can’t bring myself to go overly salty and my father-in-law’s distate for vegetables and any seasonings other than salt won’t keep me from cooking vegetables and using fresh herbs, but I’m not going to go out of my way to try any new recipes this year. I’m not baking any breads, making any pies or experimenting with fun, seasonal vegetables. I’m delegating desserts to other people, skipping the soup (though I may serve a salad in its place), and keeping the vegetables simple. My mother-in-law is making the sweet potatoes and I may even (gasp!) make a green bean casserole, though I assure you none of its ingredients will come from a can.
So far I know I’m roasting two brined turkeys. Both turkeys will be stuffed with mostly homemade stuffing though I may have to supplement if I run out of bread. I’ll make a mashed potato casserole that will reheat well and a green bean casserole. If I see something nice at the farmer’s market I may make another vegetable, but I’m not planning on it. Someone else will bring dinner rolls. There may be cranberry sauce and if there is, chances are it will come from a can.

Aint nothing wrong with Cranberry sauce from a can. I like it when it has the can shape imprinted on it. I’m going to miss Thanksgiving at your house this year. Stupid family had to go and move to the East Coast. Now I have to go there!
